The 18-year-old will feature for Rangers alongside two players from arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, whose youngsters Dominic Ball and Nathan Oduwa are also on loan at the Scottish club.
A statement on Arsenal's website said: "Everyone at Arsenal wishes Gedion well at Rangers, where he will look to gain additional senior experience."
Zelalem has made just two appearances for Arsenal's first team, though, as the club's release notes, the midfielder has already scored for the Gunners' under-21 side this season.
The highly talented American would have found it difficult to break into Arsenal's first team this season owing to their wealth of creativity in the midfield, so a temporary move to Rangers to earn much needed senior football is a wise move for both the player and the club.
As for Rangers, they have acquired a hungry young player whose pace and vision will be extremely useful as they once again pursue promotion to the Scottish top flight.
