Wide receiver Randy Moss played 14 seasons in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers. He last appeared in a game in 2012, but he reportedly kicked the door "wide open on a potential return to the NFL," according to Pro Football Talk.

Moss Speaks on Ability to Play in 2015

Tuesday, Aug. 25

"I think I’m in some condition to go play," Moss said, via Caroline Sikes of Sporting News. "That’s why I said I still have that itch. I mean, I trained with these guys this offseason. It wasn’t like I was sitting up here yelling on the field. No, I was hands-on. I had my cleats on. I was sweating. I was dying. I didn’t throw up, but other than that, I did everything that they were able to do."

Moss first discussed the possibility of returning to the field during Fox’s pregame coverage of a preseason battle between the Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams on Aug. 23.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk passed along the full interaction between Moss and host Curt Menefee:

"

"I actually have not lost the itch," Moss told Curt Menefee of FOX. "I’ve been working out with a few guys over the offseason. I have been retired for the last two years, but you never know, Curt. But it’s the love of the game that I still have inside of me."

Replied Menefee: "That’s not a commitment that you’re gonna be here beside us the rest of the year. It doesn’t sound like it. Are you thinking [about a return to football]?"

Said Moss with a big smile, "Hey, I don’t know. The sky’s the limit for me, Curt. So we’ll just have to wait and see."

"

Whether Moss would be effective in 2015 remains to be seen (if he returns), but he boasts some of the best numbers in the history of the league at his position. The 1998 Associated Press Rookie of the Year and six-time Pro Bowler is second all-time with 156 career receiving touchdowns and third all-time with 15,292 receiving yards.

He also has 10 different seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards on his resume.

However, he fell off near the end of his career, with only 434 receiving yards in 2012 with the 49ers and 393 receiving yards with three different teams in 2010. He is also 38 years old and has been out of the league since that 2012 campaign.

Still, injuries have reared their ugly head around the league this preseason, creating openings at the wide receiver position.

Kelvin Benjamin of the Carolina Panthers is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, and the Green Bay Packers confirmed that Jordy Nelson will also miss the rest of the year with a knee injury.

Joe Ovies of 99.9 The Fan in Raleigh-Durham specifically mentioned the Panthers as a possibility after Moss’ comments:

Moss is not going to be a No. 1 option at his age, but he is 6’4” with proven hands and a Hall of Fame legacy. He could join a team in need of depth as a secondary option and a veteran leader who teaches the younger playmakers on and off the field.

There are many teams around the NFL with injury problems that could do worse than a future Hall of Famer as a third or fourth option, even if Moss’ prime is well in the rearview mirror.
