Mike ChiariAug 21, 2015

Longtime NHL defenseman and current Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darryl Sydor was arrested Thursday evening on suspicion of drunk driving in Fridley, Minnesota.

According to Dave Aeikens of KSTP.com, the 43-year-old coach was arrested at 6:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. CT). Sydor was driving his 12-year-old son to a hockey game at the time of his arrest, and failed a field sobriety test with a blood-alcohol level of 0.30, which is nearly four times the legal limit.

Nicole Norfleet and Michael Russo of the St. Paul Star Tribune reported the coach posted his $12,000 bail on Aug. 22, and had been charged with two counts of driving while impaired with two or more aggravating factors. In this case those factors are endangerment of a child and having a blood-alcohol level over .16.

On Monday, Sydor entered the NHL/NHL Players’ Association Substance Abuse/Behavioral Health Program, where he'll spent at least the next 30 days, according to Russo

Sydor has served under Wild head coach Mike Yeo since 2011 after spending 18 seasons in the NHL as a dependable blueliner.

The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, native played 1,291 games and tallied 507 career points with the Los Angeles Kings, the Dallas Stars, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the St. Louis Blues.

The No. 7 overall draft pick in the 1990 NHL entry draft was a NHL All-Star in both 1998 and 1999, and he won a pair of Stanley Cups with the Stars and the Bolts in 1999 and 2004, respectively.

Sydor has helped guide the Wild to three consecutive playoff appearances, and he is expected to be a key part of Minnesota's coaching staff once again during the 2015-16 campaign.
