Kaima Taira to be Posted, Top MLB Landing Spots for Japanese Star Eyeing Cy Young & World Series

Scott PolacekNov 1, 2026

Kaima Taira seems to be on his way to Major League Baseball.

The Seibu Lions in Japan announced it will let the right-hander pursue his MLB dreams in the posting system (h/t Associated Press). Given his track record, he could be one of the best pitchers available on the market this offseason and will elevate the ceiling of whichever team he chooses.

Here is a look at some potential landing spots:

  • New York Yankees
  • San Francisco Giants
  • Los Angeles Dodgers

Taira is setting the bar high, as he told the Japanese news agency Kyodo (h/t Associated Press), "As a pitcher, my goal is to win a Cy Young award. And I'd like to pitch in the World Series as well."

He posted a sparkling 1.36 ERA this past season in Japan and has a career record of 37-24. What's more, he is versatile enough to come out of the bullpen if needed and finished with 31 saves for the Lions during the 2025 campaign.

Dan Martin of the New York Post reported the Yankees are interested and already scouted Taira. Yet Martin noted "if he were to fit into the Yankees' plans, it would have to be out of the bullpen" with the starting rotation expected to include Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Carlos Rodón, among other candidates.

New York may need multiple bullpen arms this offseason with David Bednar, Tim Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, Michael Fulmer and John Schreiber all scheduled for free agency.

As for the Giants, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported they have also scouted Taira. They are coming off a disappointing 65-97 campaign and will surely look to transform the roster ahead of the 2026 season, which may include adding Taira.

Then there are the rival Dodgers, who are always a threat to add Japanese stars.

Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto helped lead the team to back-to-back World Series titles as two of the best players in the entire league. Taira would also provide injury insurance for the rotation after Ohtani didn't pitch in the second half of the 2026 season and was limited to the designated hitter role.

There will surely be multiple teams interested in Taira this offseason, and he is taking the next step toward reaching MLB.
