Dylan Larkin Suspended By Red Wings as Team Explores Trade Opportunities Amid NHL Rumors

Julia StumbaughOct 29, 2026

Dylan Larkin has officially been suspended by the Detroit Red Wings without pay after informing the organization he will no longer play for the team as he awaits a trade, it was announced Thursday.

Larkin and the Red Wings have been in a monthslong standoff after the forward requested a trade in June.

Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson, said in a statement that Larkin has "had enough of the situation."

TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday that "trade talks have escalated on Larkin," who requested a trade this offseason and was subsequently stripped of his captaincy.

ESPN's Emily Kaplan added that "multiple teams" remain in the mix for Larkin and that the Minnesota Wild are believed to have made one of the "stronger offers" for the veteran.

Larkin, who holds a full no-trade clause, initially told the Red Wings he would only accept a trade to the Wild, Florida Panthers or Vegas Golden Knights, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

As of last week that list had expanded to include the Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche, St. James reported.

ESPN's Greg Wyshynski previously reported Larkin was not interested in playing for a Canadian team.

St. James previously reported Detroit is seeking a replacement for Larkin on the center of the top line with hopes of contending for a postseason spot in the near future.

Larkin, 30, is signed through the 2030-31 season with an $8.7 million AAV and full trade protections through the 2027-28 campaign.

Initial reporting regarding Larkin's offseason trade request preceded the organization parting ways with former GM Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings have so far seen mixed results with Horcoff in his interim position. The franchise successfully finalized an extension with Alex DeBrincat, but let Patrick Kane walk in free agency and have yet to resolve an ongoing standoff with pending restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson.

Larkin started the regular season sidelined by what the Red Wings described as an upper body injury, but has since rejoined his team. He has since contributed six points (two goals, four assists) in 10 games for Detroit.

The Red Wings will hope ending the Larkin saga and getting back a potential first-line center, followed by the potential resolution of talks with Edvinsson, will help this team recover from a rocky 5-4-3 start and take a step toward ending the franchise's decade-long playoff drought.
