Gruden Confirms Galette Tore Achilles

Thursday, Aug. 27

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Galette would undergo surgery on Friday, the team announced

Zac Boyer of the Washington Times reported Galette faces a six-to-eight-month recovery on Aug. 26.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports noted Galette's contract was a preseason split salary, which according to Rapoport, "means if [Galette] got hurt before Week 1, he'd receive $413k instead of his full salary of $745k. So a torn Achilles costs him $332k."

Galette was getting set for his first season with the Redskins after five with the New Orleans Saints, but even without his injury, he might not have been on the field at the season's start anyway, as he is facing a suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

But the 27-year-old linebacker has been one of the NFL's best pass-rushers over the past two seasons, recording 12 sacks in 2013 and 10 in 2014.

ESPN Stats & Info broke down how good the linebacker was last season:

John Keim of ESPN broke down the impact the injury could have for Washington:

The Redskins linebacking corps will take a hit during Galette's absence, but there is still plenty of talent at the position with Ryan Kerrigan coming off a 13.5-sack season in 2014.

Rookie Preston Smith will likely be thrust into more playing time. In his senior season at Mississippi State last season, Smith had 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

While the outside linebackers will be terrorizing offensive lines at the beginning of the season, they will lack the added danger Galette would have produced if he were in the lineup.
