HSFB HC Miles Smith Reportedly Resigns After Dismissing QB for Changing Play, Suspending 12 Players
The high school football coach who dismissed his starting quarterback for calling an audible and suspended 12 other players for supporting him is now out of a job himself.
Per Kolby Marting of 12News in Arizona, Desert Ridge head football coach Miles Smith has announced his resignation. Smith's dad, Lovie Smith, a former NFL head coach who was volunteering on his son's staff, also won't return to the team.
Senior quarterback Gunner Brewer told Griffin S. DeMarrais of KTVK 3TV in Arizona that Smith kicked him off the team following the Oct. 2 game against Vail Cienega High School after he changed a play that was originally called for him and instead handed the ball off to his running back.
"I basically got the play, but in the huddle, I was thinking to myself like... I have a running back who can run the ball better than me, so I'm gonna trust in my guy," Brewer said. "So, I changed the formation to put him in the backfield with me, and for him to run the ball."
Brewer added that his offensive coordinator had previously given him permission to change plays, but Smith still made the decision to remove him from the roster. Following Brewer's dismissal, 12 other players who spoke up in his defense during a team meeting were also suspended for the remainder of the season.
According to Marting, a source said that "the administration wants to allow some of those kids who were dismissed to be able to return this season and play again."
