HSFB QB Dismissed from Team After Changing Play, 12 Teammates Suspended for Rest of Season
High school football's strange week took another turn after Desert Ridge quarterback Gunner Brewer said he was kicked off the team for calling an audible at the line of scrimmage.
Twelve other players were suspended for the remainder of the season for supporting him.
Brewer told Griffin S. DeMarrais of KTVK 3TV in Arizona that head coach Miles Smith kicked him off the team when he changed a play—originally called for him—and handed the ball to his running back to get a first down and seal the game.
According to Brewer, Smith suspended the 12 other players because they disagreed with the decision and voiced their concerns to the coaching staff.
Brewer added he had been allowed to change the play under the team's previous offensive coordinator, but the coordinator was fired last month.
This marks the second notable high school football story in as many days.
On Thursday, Marist Catholic High in Oregon fired head coach Zach Loboy for running up the score by calling for two onside kicks in the first half of a game against a Cottage Grove High team that only had 16 available players.
