Oregon HSFB Coach Fired After Onside Kicks in 63-0 Win, Game Called at Halftime
An Oregon high school football coach was fired after his team ran up the score in the first half of a game on Friday, according to Mark Puleo of The Athletic.
Per Puleo, Marist Catholic High parted ways with head coach Zach Loboy following a 63-0 victory over Cottage Grove High that was called at halftime. Loboy's team attempted two onside kicks before the first half came to a close, while Cottage Grove High only had 16 players available.
Marist Catholic principal Bob Fraley released a statement in an email to football parents and guardians regarding Loboy's dismissal.
"I am writing to inform you that Marist has made the decision to remove Zach Loboy from his position as Head Varsity Football Coach, effective immediately," Fraley wrote in the email, per KVAL. "Following Friday's game against Cottage Grove, we determined that a change in leadership was necessary to reflect our school's mission and values."
Marist Catholic athletic director Rick Gardner also discussed the coaching decision.
"What happened there is really not reflective of the school's mission and how we want to treat our opponents," Gardner told Jarrid Denney of the Eugene Register-Guard. "Our athletic program tries to adhere to the mission and the values of Marist Catholic High School. In this particular case, we definitely fell short."
Marist Catholic previously won the Oregon Class 4A state championship in 2024 and owns a 3-3 record this year.
