Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson posted an apology for spitting toward members of the Las Vegas Raiders in Sunday's 33-30 win.

Gardner-Johnson was ejected in the second quarter for unsportsmanlike conduct. The CBS broadcast caught the offending action that warranted an early exit:

He followed up on Instagram after the game to "sincerely apologize to my opponent, my teammates, my organization, and everyone who supports me."

"My passion and competitive nature have always been a huge part of who I am, but I also understand that there is a line that should never be crossed," he said. "The gesture I made toward my opponent was inappropriate, unnecessary, and not a reflection of the respect I have for him or this game."

ESPN's Adam Schefter later noted the NFL will review the incident:

Gardner-Johnson had said in the locker room immediately after the victory that he failed to control his emotions in the moment:

Providing some context for what preceded the spitting, the veteran defensive back said he and Raiders tight end Brock Bowers "were just arguing and talking."

"It was nothing negative. He ain't do nothing to me," he told reporters. "It was just in the heat of the game arguing and talking s--t. That gesture isn't warranted."

Gardner-Johnson added he's expecting the NFL to levy a fine. Following a similar incident last season, Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter avoided a suspension and instead wrote a $57,222 check to the league office.

Gardner-Johnson is in his first season with the Bills, having signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal. They're his sixth team across eight seasons in the NFL.

The 28-year-old has started in each of Buffalo's first six games, recording 26 combined tackles, one interception and two pass breakups.
