JuJu Smith-Schuster Works Out For Chargers Amid LA's Struggles, WR Released by Giants in Preseason

Andrew PetersOct 13, 2026

The Los Angeles Chargers are seeking some offensive help amid a 0-5 start to the 2026 campaign.

The team hosted veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster for a tryout on Tuesday, along with four other receivers. Smith-Schuster was released by the New York Giants ahead of the Season.

On Monday, Smith-Schuster worked out for the Minnesota Vikings, who recently ย signed Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad following his release from the Giants.

The veteran wide receiver joined the Giants during the offseason but was cut during training camp while dealing with a knee injury. The 29-year-old spent the last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and recorded 345 yards and a touchdown on 33 receptions last season.

Smith-Schuster was a Pro Bowler with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018, but hasn't reached those same heights since. After spending the first five years of his career in Pittsburgh, Smith-Schuster played a season with the Chiefs in 2022, a year with the New England Patriots in 2023 and returned to Kansas City in 2024.

He's hoping to prove he can still be a reliable receiver, and Los Angeles could be the place to do so.

The Chargers' offense has been dreadful to start the season, posting the eighth-fewest yards per game (292.8) and the third-fewest points per game (16.8) as Justin Herbert struggles to find a consistent target.

Tre' Harris is the team's leading receiver but has just 225 yards. Los Angeles' typical top receiver, Ladd McConkey, has struggled with injuries early on and missed last week's game against the Denver Broncos.

Smith-Schuster likely wouldn't be able to match McConkey's production, but he could at least give Herbert another option as the team tries to get things in motion on offense.

Whether the Chargers will take a chance on him remains to be seen.
