John Cena Reveals His Match Routine, WWE Rumors on Seth Rollins' Injury, Roman Reigns & LA Knight
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
Cena Discusses How He Prepared for Matches
Nearly one year after competing in the final match of his illustrious career, WWE legend John Cena provided some insight this week into how he prepared for matches during his nearly 25 years in the company.
During an appearance Thursday on What Now? With Trevor Noah (beginning at the 46:20 mark of the podcast), Cena provided some insight into his routine prior to matches:
Cena noted that early in his career, he would just do "a couple of jumps," before "running out there like a Tasmanian devil," once his music hit.
However, Cena explained that his process became much more involved as he got older and more experience in the wrestling business.
Cena referenced a "flexibility protocol" that began two hours before his matches, adding, "I'd have to maintain a certain warmth and heart rate an hour in to make sure you're always moving around and always stretching. I'd have to practice more, like the difficult things I knew I could do in my sleep, especially the strength-based stuff that I was known for. Because I could probably do that, but I'm not as strong as I used to be."
On top of that, Cena stressed the importance of recovery after his matches, including icing himself down.
Cena's final match took place last December against Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event, ending one of the most successful careers in pro wrestling history.
A record 17-time world champion, Cena reached the top and remained there for much of his career, which speaks to his longevity.
Everything Cena did before and after his matches contributed to his lengthy run, and allowed him to step away from pro wrestling with his health largely intact.
Rollins Reportedly Dealing with Minor Injury
There is reportedly a bit more to Seth Rollins' absence from WWE programming than simply waiting for the right creative.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlePurists), Rollins is dealing with a "minor" injury, and WWE is giving him some time to heal up.
However, if WWE needed him in the fold right now, Rollins would reportedly be healthy enough to return now or in the near future.
Meltzer added that WWE wants to bring him back for "maximum impact," and is waiting for the right time for that to be the case.
Rollins was last seen on WWE programming at SummerSlam in early August when he lost a World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns in the main event.
Although he did return to the ring in September, it was only for a handful of six-man tag team matches during WWE's live event tour of South America.
None of the matches aired on TV, meaning Rollins has now been absent from WWE programming for over two months.
Rollins is not slated to compete this weekend at Money in the Bank, but one can only assume WWE would like to have him reintegrated in time for Survivor Series next month.
Given the show of respect he and Reigns had following their match at SummerSlam, perhaps an alliance between them in a WarGames match against 946 is possible.
Latest on Reigns vs. Knight at MITB
The World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and LA Knight is reportedly expected to be in a featured spot Saturday night at Money in the Bank.
According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t H Jenkins of Ringside News), the plan is for Reigns vs. Knight to headline Money in the Bank as the main event.
That doesn't come as a big surprise since Reigns' matches go on last more often than not, while Knight is a hugely popular babyface challenger in his own right.
Given their history, Reigns vs. Knight has been a highly anticipated clash, and the excitement continued to grow Monday thanks to a strong promo segment on Raw.
Per WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), there was "considerable acclaim" for the segment from people within WWE.
Multiple WWE officials were reportedly "particularly impressed" with the emotion Reigns showed, noting that there were "genuine discussions about how effective that version of Reigns could be moving forward in the appropriate setting."
The OTC has turned in strong performance after strong performance since beating CM Punk for the world heavyweight title at WrestleMania 42, and he has been more active in terms of appearances and matches since then than he had been for multiple years prior.
Reigns is firing on all cylinders, but Knight has a ton of support in his own right, which should make for a highly entertaining MITB main event with a fun atmosphere.
