UCLA Football: Week 2 Fall Camp Stock Report

Jason FrayAug 18, 2015

Week 2 of fall camp in San Bernardino, California, has brought considerable news in regard to head coach Jim Mora and the UCLA Bruins football team.

One position group has suffered multiple injuries—all to the starting unit. It's surely a cause for concern going forward.

A high-profile freshman returned to action after dealing with an ailment, and a rising sophomore has the look of a very dynamic receiving option. Lastly, an expected defensive leader on the team had a bit of an outburst at practice last week.

This piece will analyze the four aforementioned areas of interest and intrigue.

Stock Down: Health of the OL

Offensive line coach Adrian Klemm's unit is arguably UCLA's biggest strength within the offense.

The entire offensive line group has more combined returning starts than any other team in the country. Along with paving the way for running back Paul Perkins, it will also help protect an inexperienced starting quarterback (whether it's Josh Rosen or Jerry Neuheisel).

On Monday, projected starters Alex Redmond, Conor McDermott and Jake Brendel all left practice with undisclosed injuries.

Bruin Report Online noted that Redmond and Brendel returned to practice the following day. McDermott was still out. An MRI revealed no ligament damage, however. Fortunately for the Bruins, their starting left tackle should be OK.

Stock Up: Chris Clark

After battling mononucleosis throughout the first week of camp, tight end Chris Clark finally returned to practice in the second week.

It's a major coup for UCLA—considering Clark's lofty 4-star status coming out of high school, per 247Sports. While the team roster lists him at 6'5", 235 pounds, Clark appears to have lost some weight and strength because of the ailment. He'll most likely pack on some weight before the season begins.

However, Mora is confident in Clark's abilities as a player. Per Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News, Mora spoke about his plans for the tight end: "He's playing versus Virginia. We didn't bring him here to redshirt. I can promise you that."

Stock Down: Myles Jack

With Eric Kendricks now playing for the Minnesota Vikings, Myles Jack seemed like a suitable replacement as the leader within the linebacker corps.

Through the first part of practice, though, he's yet to live up to those assumptions.

The coaching staff booted Jack from practice Friday after a dust-up with McDermott. Per Wang, Jack erupted on the field—and linebackers coach Scott White led him away from the scene. Making matters worse, Jack's antics took place in front of multiple NFL scouts.

As Matthew Joye of the Daily Bruin noted, Jack needs to try to keep his emotions in check.

Stock Up: Mossi Johnson

4 of 4

Los Angeles native Mossi Johnson has been a revelation at receiver for the Bruins.

His presence in the slot has moved former starter Devin Fuller to an outside receiver spot. Thus far throughout camp, Johnson's been dynamic.

According to David Woods of Bruin Report Online, Johnson was "the clear-cut star of practice" Monday. He "made play after play, catching everything thrown at him, look[ed] explosive on screens and slants and then [made] a few plays with some considerable flair."

Johnson has also gotten looks at returning kicks throughout camp. If he can continue to bring the same sort of ability to the field during the regular season, UCLA may have a star in the making.
