Sean Payton's Response to OC Davis Webb, Broncos' Offensive Struggles Revealed in New NFL Rumors

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton ceded playcalling duties this offseason to offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

Week 1 created cause for concern, as the Broncos amassed just 176 yards in a 31-10 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Payton preached patience, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, and that may prove beneficial.

"The Broncos offense is slowly finding its footing after a sluggish Week 1, and how head coach Sean Payton handled that first week -- and his first-time playcaller, Davis Webb -- behind the scenes was crucial from a tone-setting standpoint. Payton can be harsh after wins, something he sees as a way to avoid complacency. But that 31-10 loss to Kansas City on 'Monday Night Football' required something else. The Broncos had produced nine first downs for 176 yards in Webb's debut.

"Payton, one of the league's best playcallers over decades who had relinquished duties to Webb over the offseason, did not sound thrilled during his halftime interview. But word is that Payton was highly supportive in meetings that following week, for both his coaching staff and his slow-starting team. 'He was awesome,' one source said. 'He never wavered.'

Denver's offense got off to a slow start in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Broncos fell behind 13-3 in the middle of the third quarter. However, Denver responded with 17 unanswered points (including a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns) to win 20-13. Quarterback Bo Nix finished the game with 288 passing yards (Denver also ran for 104 yards).

The Los Angeles Rams then shut out the Broncos 16-0 in the first half last Sunday night. However, Denver offense scored three touchdowns (plus a pair of two-point conversions) in the second half of a thrilling 30-26 comeback win.

So the second halves have been promising in the last two games, leading to victories. The Broncos also haven't had an easy schedule, facing teams that are 5-1 outside their matchups with Denver.
