New Anthony Richardson Trade Rumors Update Colts QB's Availability After J.J. McCarthy to Giants

In the aftermath of the J.J. McCarthy trade to the New York Giants, the quarterback market is now open with Anthony Richardson being another intriguing former first-rounder a team might look to take a flyer on.

Per ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, there is no indication right now that the Indianapolis Colts are looking to trade Richardson.

Graziano noted the Colts might be "willing to take less to move on" from Richardson later in the season since he is in the final year of his rookie contract and they try to get anything they can in return.

According to Fowler, the Giants never called Indianapolis to inquire about Richardson's status before they made the deal with the Minnesota Vikings for McCarthy.

"Richardson would welcome the chance to learn behind the scenes in the McVay or Shanahan trees, but that doesn't feel feasible, at least this season," Fowler wrote.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters at the start of training camp that Richardson requested a trade, but the team was "not going to give him away."

Richardson, despite by his own admission not having a great camp, did win the Colts' backup job. His talent and ability remain more theoretical than anything else simply because he hasn't played much, especially of late.

The 24-year-old's last start was in Week 16 of the 2024 season. His last appearance was in Week 5 last season when he played seven snaps in garbage time of the Colts' 40-6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Indianapolis declined Richardson's fifth-year option in April, making him eligible for free agency at the end of this season. It wouldn't be a surprise if a quarterback-needy team wanted to get him in the building at some point this year to see what their coaching staff can do to help develop him, then decide on whether or not to re-sign him in the offseason.
