Anthony Richardson Trade Request Updated by Colts GM Chris Ballard Amid NFL Training Camp

The Indianapolis Colts are planning to keep quarterback Anthony Richardson despite his pending trade request, general manager Chris Ballard told reporters Tuesday.

Ballard confirmed Richardson's trade request remains in place but said the Colts are "not going to give him away," per Fox 59's Mike Chappell.

He also said the Colts currently plan to keep three quarterbacks on the roster in Richardson, Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard, according to ESPN's Stephen Holder.

NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe (h/t Kevin Patra) reported in February the Colts and Richardson had "mutually agreed to seek a trade."

Richardson told reporters in May he hadn't rescinded his trade request, but that his focus would be on the Colts while he was with the team.

The Colts are currently heading into the 2026 season with Jones as the prospective QB1.

Jones earned the starting job over Richard after a training camp battle last offseason. He then led the Colts to an 8-5 record last season before suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 14.

He said in a Monday appearance on ESPN's Pat McAfee Show he has been fully cleared from the injury ahead of training camp, leaving Richardson and Leonard as likely competitors to back him up.

Richardson, the No. 4 pick of the 2023 draft, has so far been limited by injuries for the majority of his NFL career. He made just two appearances, both in relief, during the 2025 regular season after suffering a fractured orbital bone while working out ahead of Week 6.

Leonard, a sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft, got an opportunity to make his case for the job when he started the Colts' regular-season finale against the Houston Texans.

Which quarterback is able to win the QB2 job in training camp, and whether either signal caller raises their trade value during the preseason, could potentially impact what Shane Steichen's final roster looks like.

The Colts open the preseason on Aug. 13 against the New England Patriots, then play two more exhibition games against the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions before opening the regular season Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens.
