Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer Takes Blame for Mistakes in Ravens Loss After Jerry Jones Remarks

The Dallas Cowboys' poor clock management near the end of Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens played a major role in their defeat, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer took responsibility for the result Tuesday.

"I didn't do very good in the last 28 seconds," he told reporters. "I'll take accountability for it. … I hurt our chances to win that game."

His comments come after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his frustration with the loss during an appearance on his radio show (h/t Schuyler Dixon of the Associated Press).

"There is no explanation you're satisfied with. None," Jones said. "Let's be sure that we all understand that. They (coaches) don't have one that they're satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time. There's no question about it. So there is no explanation. But there's an evaluation of how not to make the same mistakes again."

Jones also talked to his coach in the aftermath:

It seemed like the Cowboys were going to win when they had 1st-and-goal from the Baltimore 2-yard line with 23 seconds remaining while trailing by three.

However, things turned during a sequence that saw Dak Prescott throw an incompletion, Luke Schoonmaker false start, Schottenheimer call his last timeout after a Prescott scramble and a throw away from the quarterback on the ensuing play.

By the time Brandon Aubrey's field goal tied it, there were just seven seconds remaining.

Yet Aubrey kicked the ball to the end zone on the ensuing kickoff for a touchback that moved the ball to the Baltimore 35-yard line. That gave Lamar Jackson time for one play, and he hit Zay Flowers for 27 yards to set up Tyler Loop's winning 56-yard field goal.

It was a shocking turn of events and one that left the Cowboys with a 1-2 record.

They are tied for last place in the NFC East with the Washington Commanders, although there is still plenty of time to turn things around this season.

"We will be better from this experience that we had with Baltimore and what happened to us at the end of the game," Jones said. "A win would have given you another way of couching it as far as having growth and enthusiasm for having won a game like that because we did come back and we came back in an impressive way. All of that makes us realize we really are just at the beginning of what I hope is an exciting year for us."

Ideally for the Cowboys, the errors near the end of Sunday's loss will be a blip on the radar by the end of a successful season. 

Still, it was a difficult defeat to accept in the moment.
