Malik Nabers Reacts to Jameis Winston Being Giants' QB1 After Jaxson Dart's Major Injury

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers expressed confidence in quarterback Jameis Winston and his style of play this week ahead of what could be a lengthy run as the team's starter.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Jaxson Dart underwent surgery on the knee injury he suffered in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, and it will keep him out for the rest of the regular season.

When asked about Winston and what playing alongside him will entail, Nabers told reporters, "I mean, he believes in his receivers to go make the plays for him. And we plan out to do that. And when the opportunity comes, you've just got to go ahead and snatch the opportunity. The fact that he gives us opportunity, that means he believes in the good work that you put in in practice. He believes that you're going to make the play for him, and I trust that he trusts me. So we'll make the play."

A Heisman Trophy and national championship winner out of Florida State, Winston was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The one-time Pro Bowler has had no shortage of ups and downs over the course of his career, which has now spanned 12 seasons with four different teams.

Winston has primarily been a backup for the past seven seasons, but he has a ton of starting experience, going 36-53 in 89 career starts.

The 32-year-old veteran is known as something of an all-or-nothing player who is willing to take risks. That has resulted in him throwing for 24,903 yards and 156 touchdowns, but also 114 interceptions.

Winston's volatility was on full display during his last season with the Bucs in 2019 when he led the NFL with 5,109 yards and threw 33 touchdown passes, while also leading the league with 30 picks.

Per ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Winston's career 9.9 air yards per target is the most among quarterbacks since he entered the league in 2014.

Although Winston may not be as consistent or well-rounded as Dart, his propensity for chucking the ball downfield could still prove fruitful for Nabers and the Giants' other wideouts.
