Manchester United Transfer News: Pedro Wants Red Devils Despite Chelsea Rumours

Matt JonesAug 18, 2015

Manchester United remains the first choice of Barcelona winger Pedro should he leave the Camp Nou this summer, despite a late effort from Chelsea to lure the 28-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

According to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, the Blues have joined the race late for the Spanish international and are hopeful of striking a deal. But SPORT (h/t Sport Witness) claim Pedro only has eyes for the red jersey at this juncture.

As we can see here, SPORT has also suggested a move to Old Trafford seems to be very close, per Sport Witness:

The Red Devils are certainly in need of some added attacking swagger. Although Memphis Depay showcased signs of his sparkling potential in United’s win 3-1 over Club Brugge on Tuesday, the young Dutchman’s performance levels could be inconsistent given his relative inexperience, meaning a more thoroughbred presence is needed at the sharp end of the pitch.

Pedro would provide those qualities and as Bleacher Report’s Andy Brassell notes, would be a good fit for the Old Trafford club:

With his industrious vertical forays, quick feet and nose for goals, Pedro seems to be the perfect man to play off the flanks for the Red Devils. Manager Louis van Gaal will also relish having a player in his squad who is enriched with the tactical discipline that typifies so many talents who have emerged from the iconic La Masia academy.

As Ben Hayward of Goal noted here, Pedro is also a player who sticks his hands up in massive matches:

The interest of Chelsea will come as a concern to some Red Devils supporters. After all, for all their early season troubles, the Blues do remain in a better position to challenge for major honours, which is something Pedro will surely be keen to do should be make the switch from Barcelona.

Could Pedro potentially be donning Chelsea colours in 2015-16?

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, like Van Gaal, would also love Pedro’s blend of intricacy and industry in his scurries on the wing. As Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph noted, the Blues could do with some attacking impetus to get their campaign kick-started:

Reading between the lines it does seem as though the Red Devils remain in pole position for the player, but there will be some nervy checks of social media from United supporters in the coming days. After all, missing out on such a talented player following such strong links would be a massive blow at this stage.

Pedro seems a much more natural fit for the Old Trafford outfit anyway. Under Van Gaal he’d flourish in a wide position, playing a critical role in a team desperate to re-establish itself at the summit of English football. Given players like Eden Hazard, Willian and Oscar are all in situ at Chelsea, the same couldn’t necessarily be said should he opt for a move to Stamford Bridge.
