Ravens' Anthony Weaver Jokes He'll Stop Calling QBs 'Poor Man' After Loss to Tyler Shough, Saints

Anthony Weaver has learned his lesson.

The Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator told reporters he would no longer refer to any quarterback as a "poor man's" version of a different quarterback after calling Tyler Shough a a "poor man's Josh Allen" before Sunday's showdown between the teams. Shough's controversial touchdown in the fourth quarter ultimately led New Orleans to a 24-17 win over the Ravens.

"I will just make sure I do not call any other quarterbacks 'poor man' because that is probably what propelled [Shough] essentially over the end zone," he joked with reporters.

In Weaver's defense, he was being complimentary of Shough in his original comments, saying the Saints' quarterback impressed him last season when New Orleans played the Miami Dolphins. Weaver was Miami's defensive coordinator last season.

"Has all the arm talent in the world [and] can run. I don't think he gets enough credit for how good [of] an athlete he is," Weaver told reporters last week. "... I just think the more reps he gets, the more confident he's going to get in that scheme and with the talent around him. I think they have done a good job of trying to build the talent around him. They have tremendous skill players. I think they have upgraded their offensive line from when I saw [them] a year ago. So, sky's the limit for the kid."

It was the "poor man" part of the comments that everybody latched onto, however. That included Saints' coaches, who started referring to Shough as "Poor Man" throughout the week.

"I loved it," Shough told reporters after Sunday's win. "I knew what [Weaver] meant by it, but yeah, obviously [Allen's] an elite player, but it fires me up."

The 26-year-old quarterback is making a name for himself this season, throwing for 662 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions through two games while rushing for 31 yards and two touchdowns. He's led the Saints to a 1-1 record and the team was a failed two-point conversion in Week 1's overtime loss against the Detroit Lions away from stacking back-to-back wins to start the season.

Nobody is Allen. But the Saints are more than happy to have "Poor Man" on their side.
