WWE SummerSlam 2015: Matches With Most Historical Implications

Historically, SummerSlam has long been one of the most impactful pay-per-views on the WWE schedule. We've seen some of the biggest storylines begin and end at the show, not to mention a host of wrestlers who have used the event as a platform to reach the next step of their careers.

2015 brings a four-hour supercard, and you can bet that WWE is pulling out all the stops to make sure this is an event that goes down in history.

Which matches will still be talked about in years to come?

Seth Rollins vs. John Cena

Anytime there's a title-versus-title match in the works, you know that history will be made.

You don't typically see one man holding two belts, particularly in WWE. By the end of Sunday night, it seems all but certain that either Seth Rollins or John Cena will have two championships to his name—a first for the current world title lineage.

Outside of some sort of non-decisive finish, one competitor will go home with nothing. Even then, both outcomes will be marked with some kind of historical happening.

If Cena is successful, he will have rendered his current set of merch outdated with a 16th world title reign—a feat that, as mentioned on Raw last night, would put him on the same number as Ric Flair.

Meanwhile, if Rollins manages to capture the United States Championship, he'll put an end to Cena's dominant run with that belt. We may have seen a lot of people kick out of the Attitude Adjustment in recent months, but it's worth remembering that Cena has taken on all comers and won.

It may have come out of nowhere, but this title-versus-title match has some serious weight behind it. We know that Rollins and Cena have excellent chemistry in the ring, but they've never met in a match with greater stakes on both sides than this one.

Team Bella vs. Team B.A.D. vs. PCB

WWE is attempting to turn the Divas division into a platform for women's wrestling—and the movement features its biggest test yet at SummerSlam.

The Triple Threat trios match set for the show could well be an exciting, fast-paced showcase of the best that today's crop of female competitors have to offer. However, the nine competitors involved are going to be under some scrutiny.

A raid of NXT talent has bolstered the main roster's female component, and the matches that we've seen from the reinvigorated division so far have been promising. However, we haven't quite seen anything that matches the best of the work that went on in NXT.

SummerSlam is the ideal time for that to happen. The last few weeks have allowed fans to get to know Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Charlotte, but now it's time for them to really let loose.

There is a huge amount of ability set to be displayed in the ring for this bout. Between Nikki Bella's excellent character work as an obnoxious champion, the submission skills of Becky Lynch and the sheer athleticism of Charlotte, it's a melting pot, and every competitor deserves the opportunity to show off her unique skills.

You can trace the roots of this shift back to the #GiveDivasAChance movement earlier in the year, but this match could be the deciding factor in its long-term success. If it's great, we'll look back on SummerSlam as a defining chapter in a new generation of women's wrestling in WWE.

Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker

A match between two bona fide WWE legends will always be remembered, but the outcome of this main event looks set to make history anyway.

On the one hand, you have the potential for Brock Lesnar to once again defeat Undertaker, perhaps closing the casket on one of wrestling's great characters. Make no mistake: There is every possibility that Lesnar will finish the job he started at WrestleMania 30 this coming Sunday.

At the same time, The Phenom could well put away The Beast Incarnate. That would see Lesnar's two-year reign of terror come to a crushing halt and would perhaps suggest that Undertaker is being prepped for one last run with a big win over such a potent figure.

Simply put, the result of this bout will shape the careers of both men. The future of both Lesnar and Undertaker will be decided by who comes out on top at SummerSlam.

WWE is pitting its two biggest special attractions outside of The Rock against one another. Fans aren't going to be satisfied by anything other than a decisive outcome, so it will be very interesting indeed to see which man gets the job done.

Either Lesnar or Undertaker will firmly establish himself as the man at the top of the WWE food chain. Both men could do great things in that position—but both would put a very different spin on the months to come.
