Rays Unveil Throwback-Inspired Road Uniform in New Video and Photos, Will Debut vs. Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays heard their fans loud and clear.

The franchise unveiled Monday new primary road uniforms that evoke the original design from when it arrived in MLB in 1998.

Putting Tampa Bay across the chest is intentional as well with the Hillsborough County Commission approving the funding plan for a new stadium that will keep the Rays in their current market for the foreseeable future.

"These uniforms celebrate our long-term commitment to Tampa Bay," CEO Ken Babby said. "As our team travels the country, we do so with tremendous admiration for our home. Tampa Bay is always in our hearts and that's why we will wear it across our chest."

The Rays' original branding didn't last long. They introduced a redesign in 2001 that ditched the purple, blue and green gradient in favor of a more understated green look.

Starting with its 25th anniversary in 2023, Tampa Bay has worn Devil Rays throwbacks on special occasions. Its City Connect jersey provided a different spin on the nickname and Devil Ray logo.

The organization staged a fan poll on social media back in March, teasing new road threads. What was revealed Monday was the overwhelming choice of those who responded.

Given the apparent demand, the road grays are bound to be very popular along the Gulf Coast.

The Rays will break them out Tuesday for the second half of their doubleheader with the New York Yankees. They have a six-game lead on the Bronx Bombers and can clinch an American League East title this week.
