Stefon Diggs Reportedly Fined for TD Celebration That Resulted in Crucial Commanders Penalty

Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs has reportedly been fined for the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he was assessed after scoring a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

According to The Ringer's Tom Pelissero, Diggs was fined $14,926 for jumping onto and bear-hugging the goalpost as part of his touchdown celebration:

Diggs' touchdown brought the Commanders within two points of the Eagles' lead with 9:59 remaining in regulation. Washington potentially would have gone for two and the tie, but a 15-yard penalty took that out of consideration.

The Commanders went on to lose 24-22 when their game-tying two-point conversion attempt failed with 1:01 left on the clock.

Diggs, 32, signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Commanders in August following his offseason release from the New England Patriots.

Penalty notwithstanding, Diggs' Washington tenure got off to a solid start, as he caught four passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in the narrow loss to Philly.

Diggs is in the midst of his 12th NFL season following stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Patriots.

His greatest success came over his four years in Buffalo, as he finished with at least 100 catches, 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns all four seasons, resulting in four Pro Bowl nods, one First Team All-Pro selection and one Second Team All-Pro selection.

After a torn ACL cut his 2024 season short in Houston, Diggs bounced back with 85 grabs for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last season for a Patriots team that reached the Super Bowl.

In need of a veteran wideout to take some of the attention away from Terry McLaurin, the Commanders brought in Diggs as another weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels.

By signing Diggs, the Commanders added some significant production, as Diggs has recorded 946 receptions for 11,559 yards and 75 touchdowns during his career.

Diggs can perhaps make up for last week's mistake if he continues to play at a high level, but Washington can ill afford any additional lapses in judgment.

The Commanders will be back in action on Sunday when they go on the road to face the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.
