New Red Sox Rumors on Sonny Gray's Potential MLB FA Contract Amid Retirement Speculation

Sonny Gray is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career at 36 years old, and it could lead to a big payday in free agency — if he continues playing beyond the 2026 campaign.

According to Mass Live's Chris Cotillo, the Boston Red Sox's ace could command a deal similar to the three-year, $75 million deal the Texas Rangers gave Nathan Eovaldi two years ago.

But Gray isn't fully set on returning to baseball.

Cotillo noted that Gray said in an interview with The Boston Globe recently that he would retire "in a heartbeat" if his family gave any indication that they wanted him to be home year-round.

Cotillo added that those within the organization take Gray's talks of retirement seriously. He has spent off days this season visiting his family's home in Nashville, regardless of where the team is playing.

"We can get into that at another time but not right now," Gray said when asked about retirement, per Cotillo.

Whether Gray will call it quits after this year remains to be seen, but he'll look to finish off his renaissance season strong. He's tied for the best record in baseball at 17-5, notching a 2.76 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 140 strikeouts.

With Gray's help, the Red Sox turned their season around and are now on the precipice of securing the second wild-card spot at 82-70.
