MiLB Prospect Ryan Lasko Released from Hospital Months After Being Paralyzed in On-Field Collision

Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko has been released from the hospital more than two months after suffering an injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down, Janie McCauley reported Wednesday for the Associated Press.

After recovering at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, Lasko is set to return home before staying for two months at a hotel near the hospital to continue treatment, according to McCauley.

Lasko shared a video of himself Wednesday exiting the facility while pushing himself in a wheelchair.

"Thankful for all of these amazing people who've helped me through this process. Excited to finally be going home!" Lasko captioned the video.

Lasko was injured June 30 after colliding with a teammate in the outfield while playing for Double-A Midland in Frisco, Texas.

He suffered a cervical vertebrae fracture that necessitated "spinal decompression and stabilization surgery" at a hospital in Plano, per MLB.com's Martin Gallegos.

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said at the time of the surgery that Lasko's doctor had not made "a definitive statement saying he's not going to regain feeling in his lower half," per Gallegos.

Lasko wrote in a July 27 social media post he had "sensation from my feet up to my knees, along with a lot of involuntary leg movements."

He added he had "sensation in the side of my thighs, hamstring and back" as well as 75 percent and 50 percent usage of his left and right hands, respectively.

As of his release from the Kessler Institute, Lasko has "some feeling and tingling sensations" in his legs and feet, McCauley reported.

McCauley reported Lasko's doctors are "optimistic he could make a full recovery and walk again in time."

Lasko, 24, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 draft. He had played 73 Double-A games in 2026 and was ranked as the Athletics' No. 18 prospect at the time of his injury.
