New MLB Rumors on David Stearns' Hot Seat, Potential Fits for Team's Manager Search

The New York Mets are approaching a crucial offseason in which they will be searching for their next manager, and it sounds like team president David Stearns' job will be safe.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, while Stearns "is drawing ire from the team's fanbase" amid a disappointing season, it's still expected that he will "conduct the search for the next manager." Olney added that team owner Steve Cohen "will have final say," but he "won't push Stearns aside to pick his own candidate."

At 69-82, the Mets are last in the NL East and have been eliminated from playoff contention. Still, they've fared better under interim manager Andy Green, going 35-34 since former manager Carlos Mendoza was fired in June.

Despite New York's improved performance with Green at the helm, Olney reported that "the plans for Green have not changed, according to organizational sources: He will return to his work in the front office rather than continue as the club's manager going forward." Olney floated the possibility of the Mets offering Green their vacant general manager role.

As for who could take over as manager once Green steps down, Olney reported that Hall of Famers Carlos Beltran and Albert Pujols "could be in play" if Stearns wants to target a splashy name.

If Stearns opts for someone with prior experience managing in the majors, former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross "could be a possible fit." Olney noted that Green had worked as Ross' bench coach in Chicago and "has spoken about how much he learned" during their time together, so he could be "an important ally" as the Mets evaluate their managerial options.
