Jerry Jones 'Very Optimistic' Cowboys Can Play Better After Loss to Giants in NFL Week 1

Despite a disappointing loss against the New York Giants in Sunday night's season opener, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is confident in his team's ability to bounce back quickly.

During his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones declared that the Cowboys will perform better in Week 2 when they meet the Washington Commanders.

"We're very optimistic that we can play better than we did Sunday night," Jones said, per The Athletic's Jon Machota. "… We caught a Giants team that is much improved and well-coached. … We have our heads down. We will do some things differently this week."

Despite facing a rebuilding Giants team that is entering a new era under head coach John Harbaugh, the Cowboys suffered a 28-20 loss in front of a primetime audience on Sunday Night Football. Star quarterback Dak Prescott was limited to 175 yards and two touchdowns on 22-of-34 passing. He also threw an interception before halftime that Jones said was "definitely the turning point in the game."

Jones went on to add that despite the lackluster showing to start the season, it's up to the Cowboys to address their deficiencies before they return to the field at home against the Commanders.

"We're all very disappointed. Having said that, though, the question is, 'OK, what are we going to do about it?'" Jones said. "The real world is that we are where we thought we were relative to continually working on the things that you saw kick us in the butt [Sunday night]. We're going to continue [working on] that. The very things that, frankly, caused us to not win that ballgame are the things that we should be working on and what we were working on going into the game."

Jones also noted that Dallas has integrated many new faces this offseason, especially on defense. Still, he expressed optimism that the team will fare better against Washington.

"The facts are, we got a lot of new people on defense doing different things then they've been doing. So, that's got to come together," he said. "If we will keep our head down and working on it, it will be better than it was Sunday night."
