Bo Bichette Makes Decision on Mets Contract Option in New Rumors with $84M Left on Deal

Coming off a disappointing 2026 season, Bo Bichette is staying with the New York Mets as he looks to rebound next year.

Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, Bichette will opt in to his $42 million salary for the 2027 season to remain with the Mets. The infielder is also owed $42 million in 2028, but will have another chance to opt out next winter.

One of the top free agents last offseason, Bichette signed a unique three-year, $126 million contract to join the Mets in January 2026. He has opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, potentially giving him the opportunity to secure a longer-term deal.

It seemed apparent very early in the 2026 campaign that Bichette would decide to stay with the Mets given his struggles at the plate. He hit .255/.300/.376 prior to the All-Star break.

Things did improve for Bichette after the break with a .267/.329/.411 slash line, but it was highly unlikely he would be able to get a contract on the open market anywhere close to the money he will get by opting in.

Bichette has been up and down over the past three seasons. His 2024 campaign was limited to just 81 games due to injuries, then he bounced back in 2025 with a .311/.357/.483 slash line in 139 games to help the Toronto Blue Jays win the AL East.

A knee injury kept Bichette out for the first two rounds of the playoffs, but he returned to post a .923 OPS in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite a difficult 2026 season, Bichette and the Mets have reasons to be optimistic about a bounce back in 2027. He is only 28 and was also learning to play a new position at third base because Francisco Lindor is entrenched at shortstop in Queens.

If the Mets get the best version of Bichette next season, it will provide a huge boost as they look to get back to being a playoff contender in the NL.
