Matthew Stafford, Drake Maye Make Woeful NFL History with Rough Stat from Rams, Patriots Losses

Matthew Stafford and Drake Maye, the top two finishers in the 2025 NFL MVP voting, made dubious history with their start to the new season.

Per OptaSTATS, never before had the first-place and second-place finishers in MVP voting from the previous season seen their teams score 10 points or fewer in the season opener.

Maye and the New England Patriots lost 13-10 against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night in a Super Bowl 60 rematch. He had a disastrous fourth quarter with three interceptions, including one in the end zone with 26 seconds remaining when the Patriots were in position to potentially tie the game with a field goal.

Stafford, who won his first career MVP award in his 17th season, and the Los Angeles Rams were defeated 27-7 by the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. He wasn't as bad as Maye, throwing just one interception, but his 155 yards passing were his fewest since Week 11 last season against the Seahawks.

The 10 points for the Patriots were their fewest since Week 5 of the 2024 season. The Rams' seven points marked their lowest output in 75 games started by Stafford.
