Deshaun Watson Prepared to 'Showcase' Talents for Browns After Winning QB1 Job over Shedeur Sanders

Ahead of his first NFL start since October 2024, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is looking to prove he still has a lot left in the tank.

Speaking to reporters after Wednesday's practice, Watson explained he wants to "showcase" his ability on the field as the Browns get ready to play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.

"Me being my last year of my deal and Year 10, I feel like this is my opportunity to be able to go and showcase that I can still play in this league," said Watson. "I want to continue to play as well. So, this is my opportunity."

Watson was officially named Cleveland's starter on Aug. 24 after competing with Shedeur Sanders throughout training camp and the preseason.

Browns head coach Todd Monken said going with Watson ultimately came down to him giving their offense the "best chance to move the ball and score points."

Sunday will mark just the 20th game Watson has played for the Browns since being acquired from the Houston Texans in March 2022. His last appearance was against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7 of the 2024 season.

Watson tore his Achilles in that game, then re-tore it in January 2025 after rolling his ankle. The 30-year-old missed all of 2025 while rehabbing.

This is a crucial season in Watson's career, as he is entering the final year of his five-year, $230 million contract. He will technically count against the Browns' salary cap through 2030 due to void years, but this could be his final season in Cleveland depending on how things play out.

Watson needs to prove he can stay healthy and be an effective player again. He has played just 19 games since the start of the 2021 season.

Even when Watson has been on the field, his play has left a lot to be desired. His 21.0 QBR during the 2024 season would have ranked last among all quarterbacks if he had enough attempts to qualify.

Watson has thrown for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and completed 61.2 percent of his attempts as Cleveland's starter.

The Jaguars, Cleveland's opponent on Sunday, mark the last team Watson beat. He helped the Browns to an 18-13 victory in Jacksonville on Sept. 15, 2024.
