Taylen Green's Role for NFL Week 1 Discussed by Browns HC as QB Splits Reps With Shedeur Sanders

Despite naming Deshaun Watson as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback and Shedeur Sanders as his backup, head coach Todd Monken left the door open for rookie signal-caller Taylen Green to see some action in Sunday's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Monken told reporters on Monday that Sanders and Green are splitting practice reps as the scout-team QB and said that Green could have a package of plays installed for him on Sunday.

"Could be. There could be a package where we have him," Monken said.

Monken was also asked if having three quarterbacks active on game day would be too many.

"If we can afford it, it would be nice to have five or six quarterbacks up," Monken said before admitting, "but three is a lot."

A sixth-round pick in this year's draft, Green made Cleveland's 53-man roster after second-year quarterback Dillon Gabriel was placed on injured reserve due to a back injury. Known for his athleticism, the Arkansas alum impressed at the NFL scouting combine in February, running the fastest 40-yard dash by a quarterback since 2003 at 4.36 seconds. He showed off his skills in his preseason debut, running for a game-high 66 yards on eight carries in a 37-13 win over the New England Patriots.

"That's what he is, just a tremendous athlete that [is] highly intelligent," Monken said after the game. "You saw it. There's a lot to work with there. We just got to refine it."

It sounds like Green has done enough over the past few weeks to at least garner consideration for an active role on game days. Monken is known for his offensive acumen, so he could have some tricks up his sleeve when the Browns open the season against the Jags on Sunday.
