Zeev Buium, Canucks Agree to 8-Year, $75M Contract Extension After Quinn Hughes Trade to Wild

The Vancouver Canucks agreed to an eight-year contract extension worth $75 million with defenseman Zeev Buium, the team announced Friday.

Buium is about to enter his first full season in Vancouver after the team acquired him as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in Dec. 2025. The Canucks also received Marco Rossi, Liam Öhgren and a first-round pick in the deal.

Vancouver eventually selected Adam Novotný with the pick.

Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson was excited about Buium's future with the team following the extension.

"Zeev has settled in nicely with our organization since his trade to Vancouver last season, and we are extremely happy to see him make this long-term commitment to the Canucks," Johnson said as part of Friday's announcement. "He is a key member of our young core and a player we will build around moving forward. Zeev has a lot of upside, and we feel with his abilities he will flourish in the system and environment we are creating inside our locker room. We look forward to working together and creating a strong partnership and foundation for our future."

Buium was initially scheduled to become a restricted free agent following the 2026-27 season before receiving the extension.

The average annual value of $9.38 million on his new deal ranks No. 11 among all defensemen (via Spotrac).

Buium appeared in 76 combined games with the Canucks and Wild during the 2025-26 season, recording 20 assists and six goals.

Vancouver is attempting to put together a resurgent 2026-27 campaign after coming off a 25-49-8 finish last season.
