Sean McDermott Teases Possible NFL Return, Reveals 'Toughest Truth' from Bills Exit

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that he's looking to return to the NFL sidelines.

"Look, I want to coach again," McDermott said during a Friday appearance on the Rich Eisen Show (3:50 mark). "I want to be a head coach in the NFL. I've got this burning desire in my heart to win a world championship and to take that to an organization and a fanbase. So, I owe that to myself but I also owe that to the next organization that I work for because I want to build on the success that we had in Buffalo."

He was also asked about his "toughest truth" following his departure from the Bills.

"I would say the hardest truth I got, and it hit me between the eyes, was sharing more of myself and sharing more of who Sean really is," McDermott said (4:40 mark). "And it's not that I didn't do that on a coaching level, but on a personal level. Like dropping my guard a little bit and just showing them my true self as a person."

The 52-year-old served as the Bills' head coach from 2017-25 before he was fired at the end of the 2025 season.

McDermott compiled a 98-50 record during his tenure in Buffalo, making eight playoff appearances.

The Bills struggled to emerge from the AFC despite their consistent postseason trips, as four of their past five playoff exits came in the divisional round.

While McDermott previously revealed that he was taking a year off from coaching during the 2026 season, he's interested in eventually coming back to the NFL.
