C.J. Stroud Contract Extension Deadline Revealed by GM Nick Caserio Ahead of 2026 NFL Season

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio revealed the timeline regarding a potential contract extension for quarterback C.J. Stroud to reporters on Tuesday.

"If we don't get it figured out before the season starts, then it'll be something we address in the offseason," Caserio said.

Houston's regular season begins on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Texans host the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. ET.

Stroud is under contract for two more seasons (2026-2027) after the Texans picked up their fifth-year option on his rookie deal last April.

three NFL seasons. He's completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 10,876 yards (7.5 yards per attempt), 62 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. The former Ohio State star has also rushed for 609 yards and four scores.

Stroud's best year was his first campaign, when he won the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year award and even got MVP votes (tied for eighth in the race). He helped turn around a team that went 3-13-1 the year before his arrival and led it to an AFC South championship at 10-7 overall. The Texans even won a playoff game, destroying the Cleveland Browns 45-14 in the AFC Wild Card round.

Houston won 10 games in 2024 and 12 in 2025, making the playoffs both years. However, Stroud hasn't enjoyed the same personal success. He was 25th in quarterback rating in 2024 and 17th in 2025 after finishing sixth in that category in 2023.

Stroud also finished his 2025 season poorly, throwing four interceptions and completing just 20-of-47 passes in a 28-16 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round. He did, however, help the team to a 30-6 blowout victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round.

Of course, the 2026 season brings new hope and optimism for a Texans team with a great defense on paper that should, at the very least, make Houston a playoff contender. If the offense improves and Stroud returns to his 2023 form, Houston can emerge as an AFC contender.

Stroud has shown great potential and play in the past, and he's one of the reasons the Texans have enjoyed a great turnaround after a rough three-year stretch in which the team didn't win more than 4 games in a season (2020-2022). It's clear the Texans are interested in an extension based on Caserio's comments, but one can surmise it would be after this season.

"Throughout the offseason, the Texans and Stroud's camp have had negotiations, but nothing has been imminent toward an agreement, according to league sources. To start camp on July 29, Caserio said there was a 'possibility' the team could reach a contract extension. But with the regular season now less than two weeks away, the chance of reaching a deal is gradually shrinking."

So as of now, the Texans are full steam ahead toward a crucial regular-season opener against a Bills team that should be in the mix for an AFC crown.
