Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Denies Josh Sweat, Cardinals Trade Buzz With Blunt Statement

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst emphatically shot down a recent trade rumor that linked his team to Arizona Cardinals defensive end Josh Sweat.

Per ESPN's Rob Demovsky, Gutekunst told reporters on Tuesday that the Packers and Cardinals haven't had any trade discussions involving the former Pro Bowler.

"Somebody's making stuff up," Gutekunst said bluntly.

Sweat is under contract with the Cardinals through the 2028 season, but he would be an obvious fit with the Packers. After starting his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, he followed defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to Arizona after he became the team's head coach and produced a career-high 12 sacks in 2025.

Gannon is now Green Bay's defensive coordinator, fueling the expectation that the team would pursue Sweat as a replacement for star edge rusher Micah Parsons, who will start the 2026 campaign on the PUP list.

The Packers only kept four edge rushers on their initial 53-man roster in Lukas Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr. and rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton, so they could use some extra depth. For now, it sounds like Sweat isn't on Gutekunst's wishlist as the start of the 2026 season approaches.
