Christian Gonzalez Discusses 'Frustrating' Patriots Contract Talks, Noncommittal on Week 1 Status

Christian Gonzalez is certainly frustrated to have not reached an extension with the New England Patriots, but he said Tuesday that his focus is on the 2026 campaign.

"It's frustrating, but I'm focused on the season," Gonzalez told reporters about his contract situation. "I'm focused on here now."

He also was a bit noncommittal when asked whether the contract situation could impact his status for Week 1.

His comments come after Patriots executive vice president Eliot Wolf said the two sides are continuing to have talks about a new deal.

"Each side is trying to do what's right for them. Christian is a tremendous player that we've been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn't changed," he said. "We're going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done."

Gonzalez is entering the final year of his rookie deal, though the Patriots picked up his $18.1 million club option for the 2027 season.

Gonzalez is coming off a tremendous year in which he recorded 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups to earn his first Pro Bowl selection. With Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon resetting the market with a deal that pays him $33 million per year, Gonzalez figures to command a similar number as well.
