Chelsea Transfer News: Huge Signings Planned in Latest Blues Rumours

Stuart NewmanAug 15, 2015

Chelsea are edging ever closer to the capture of Augsberg defender Baba Rahman, who has reportedly passed a medical at Stamford Bridge.

The left-back has been a target of manager Jose Mourinho throughout the summer, and it appears that the Portuguese boss has finally got his man for a fee in excess of £20 million—per Sky Sports.

So, what can Baba bring to Stamford Bridge? Well, it’s safe to say his addition won’t fix the many problems in west London.

The Blues are looking a little weak right now—they’re not blessed with a great amount of depth and need more than a full-back to ease their woes.

Besides, will Baba be given the nod ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta? It doesn’t look too likely based on Mourinho’s faith in the Spaniard.

Still, the Ghanaian does give the Blues boss something he doesn’t have in many other areas on the pitch—options.

He certainly has credentials, too, as he’s something of a complete left-back. Baba is a strong tackler yet still has plenty of energy and a forward-thinking philosophy.

In fact, the player himself said that his eye for attacking is his main attribute—via FIFA.com:

"You’ve got to be strong in both defence and attack. You have to be confident enough in your own ability to push forward, but of course you’ve also got to tackle strongly, pass accurately and remain disciplined. Perhaps the key thing about my play is my pace, technique and willingness to attack."

Bleacher Report’s Chelsea correspondent still doesn’t believe that Baba is the solution at Stamford Bridge, though, as he thinks they need to invest in other areas:

A central defender is what Hayes and many Blues fans truly want to see walk through the doors, and they may well get their wish.

Antonio Rudiger

Chelsea have reportedly been given the “all clear” to sign Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger following Roma’s failed attempts to lure him to the Italian capital.

According to Sky Italia (via talkSPORT) Roma’s enquiry as to Rudiger’s availability was immediately knocked back by the Bundesliga outfit, which leaves Chelsea “neck and neck” in the bid to sign him.

Many won’t know a great deal about the German defender, but he’s strong, pacy and possesses a great deal of aerial presence—very similar to Gary Cahill.

Chelsea need someone who can fill the boots of the ever-improving John Terry, and Rudiger may just be the perfect candidate.

The 22-year-old will reportedly set Chelsea back upwards of £22 million; but as a cheap alternative to the John Stones, it’s a very good option to have.

However, La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia) reported that terms have been agreed between Stuttgart and Roma for Rudiger to join the Serie A side on loan next term:

That means that Mourinho needs to act fast if he’s to get his man, and by laying £20 million on the table, he’ll give both player and club plenty to think about.

The Blues were by far the best team in the Premier League last term, which does raise the question somewhat as to why fans are panicking.

But it appears that unless Mourinho adds some talented players to his squad in the right areas, 2015/16 will be a struggle.

Baba is undoubtedly a start to adding the squad depth needed to compete for four trophies, while Rudiger would truly send the Blues on their way.
