Manchester United Transfer News: Top Names Eyed by Red Devils in Latest Rumours

Stuart NewmanAug 15, 2015

Manchester United may well have kicked off the 2015/16 Premier League with two victories, yet the performances simply haven’t been worthy of a side challenging for the title.

Sure, they say the sign of champions is playing badly and winning, but it’s clear the Red Devils aren’t quite up to scratch.

Manager Louis van Gaal could well turn to the transfer window to add the last remaining pieces to his world-class puzzle; and here, we round up the latest rumours from Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been dealt a big blow in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane after he seemingly promised his future to the north London outfit.

The Red Devils have been linked with the front man since the start of the summer, but it seems they’ll now need to turn their attention elsewhere.

Kane, who has been handed the No. 10 shirt for 2015/16, told Jason Burt of the Telegraph that he wants to etch himself into Tottenham folklore:

"

I’m happy. I’m focussed on what I do. I’m happy at Tottenham which is a great club heading in the right direction. I want to become a club legend. You are always going to face pressure in football. But I’m very strong-minded and I know what I want to achieve and taking that No. 10 shirt was just another part of that.

The Englishman netted 31 goals in all competitions last term, and that much was enough for Van Gaal to go after him as a strike partner for skipper Wayne Rooney.

However, the latest developments could mean the Dutchman has to move on. That may not be a bad thing, though.

Kane was virtually non-existent in the Premier League curtain-raiser at Old Trafford, with the immense pressure on his shoulders undoubtedly playing a part.

Journalist Greg Lea of Squawka believes the England international isn’t quite good enough for the top sides just yet.

Kane is far from the finished product and may have already found his level at a top, but not elite, club in Tottenham Hotspur. He may underwhelm this season and fail to cope with the added pressure of being his side’s established talisman, or he may suffer a crisis of confidence if the goals suddenly dry up.

As for United, the striker hunt must continue elsewhere, and one certain Barcelona forward’s name is hot in the rumour mill.

Pedro Saga Continues

Rumours of Barcelona star Pedro making his way to Old Trafford are much like the player himself—just running and running.

The seemingly endless stories continue via Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, who reports that negotiations have stalled due to United looking to barter with the Spanish giants on their asking price.

Pedro has a £21.3 million buyout clause in his contract, but the Red Devils are reportedly only willing to offer £17.7 million plus £3.6 million in add-ons.

It seems United need to get a move on with their talks, though, as Wheeler writes that rivals Manchester City are waiting in the wings ready to make a bid.

However, one thing is for sure: Pedro is there for the taking.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique recently appeared to accept that the Spaniard was off to pastures new (via Wheeler), saying: “We all know the situation that Pedro is experiencing. We want him to stay, but it’s a difficult decision. Nothing has changed yet, but it will change. Pedro is in a difficult situation. He’s a player who wants to stay but also wants more minutes.”

United can certainly offer him more minutes; it’s all just a case of the powers-that-be forking out to get him in red.

And if they’re serious about landing Pedro, then they need to get to work sooner rather than later.
