Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho Hints He Might Spend Amid Pedro Rumours

Rory MarsdenAug 14, 2015

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has hinted that he may do some more business in the current transfer window as rumours emerge linking the Blues to Barcelona winger Pedro.

The Premier League champions have been quiet so far this summer, with their only purchase of note being the addition of Asmir Begovic from Stoke as a replacement back-up goalkeeper for the departed Petr Cech.

However, speaking ahead of Chelsea's Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday, Mourinho was keen to point out that there is still time before the transfer window closes, per Ben Burrows in the Mirror:

"

The club wants titles, the players want titles, the fans want titles. We are not top of the league in relation to the spenders it doesn’t mean people have to be worried. The transfer window is not closed, secondly because you don’t always have to be champion in the market and third, because we do things when we have to do, when we think we can do.

"

The Portuguese was typically coy on the matter, but he did not rule out making further purchases this summer to strengthen his title-defending squad.

One of those purchases could be Barca's Pedro, who has drawn interest from the Blues as well as Manchester United and Manchester City, per La Liga expert Guillem Balague:

The 28-year-old Spaniard's days at the Camp Nou are likely numbered, as he is frustrated with his lack of game time under Barca boss Luis Enrique, per BBC Sport.

He is seemingly there for the buying as long as his release clause of €30 million (£21.4 million) is activated, per Andy Mitten of ESPN FC.

Chelsea should seriously consider increasing their interest in Pedro and shelling out for the Spain international.

Having made no significant additions in attack this summer, Chelsea are relying heavily on Diego Costa to stay fit and provide the goals to propel them toward another league title, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:

With only Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao as back-ups, the Blues do not have reliable goalscorers in their squad, especially as they will also be eager to go the distance in the Champions League.

Pedro could rectify that, as he is a proven goalscorer at the highest level as well as a terrific foil for other players.

Mourinho is traditionally calculated in his transfer dealings and only spends big money on players he feels are genuinely required.

With all of their title rivals—United, City and Arsenal—having made significant additions so far this summer, Chelsea risk going backwards if they do not make further telling acquisitions before the transfer window closes.

Pedro could be a fine addition, as could the heavily linked John Stones from Everton as necessary centre-back cover and a long-term replacement for John Terry, per Andy Hunter in the Guardian.

The core of Chelsea's squad is impressive, but one or two injuries could derail their title challenge. They need to add further depth to the squad before September, and based on his latest comments, Mourinho may be about to do just that.
