The initiative is part of the NHL's partnership with Fanatics, which has been producing the league's uniforms since the 2024-25 season.
The partnership made Fanatics the NHL's official uniform supplier through the 2034-35 season.
NHL EVP of marketing Brian Jennings told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski when the deal was first announced in 2023 that Fanatics would look at adding a new specialty jersey around the 2026-27 campaign.
The NHL previously produced apparel through a partnership with Adidas. That partnership featured specialty jerseys as part of the Reverse Retro collection.
That promotion, which featured jerseys inspired by each franchise's past, featured drops in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
Since the Fanatics partnership began in 2024, the NHL has only introduced specialty jerseys for single-game promotions such as the Winter Classic or Stadium Series.
Fanatics has previously been involved in manufacturing locally-inspired uniforms through the brand's partnership with Nike and MLB, which began its City Connect collection in 2021.
The NBA, which has its uniforms supplied by Nike, began its own collection of locally-inspired uniforms when the league launched the City Edition collection in 2017.
The NHL's specialty jerseys will be released alongside a general collection of Fanatics apparel inspired by the new design, the NHL reported.
More details about the uniforms will be released after the NHL opens the regular season on Tuesday, Sept. 29, according to the league.
