Nick Kyrgios Tests Positive for Cocaine, Takes 'Full Responsibility' in Apology After Suspension

Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency due to a failed drug test.

In an apology statement posted on X, Kyrgios revealed the test came back positive for cocaine and took "full responsibility" for the situation.

Per Graham Dunbar of the Associated Press, the ITIA provisionally suspended Kyrgios after a drug test administered in June when he was playing in a lower-tier tournament in Spain.

Dunbar noted Kyrgios faces a ban of up to four years, but it's "expected" he will receive a lighter discipline.

Dunbar cited a similar case from 2017 involving Dan Evans, who also tested positive for cocaine. He received a one-year suspension.

Kyrgios, 31, turned pro in 2012 and steadily rose up the ranks, reaching a high-water mark of No. 13 in the ATP standings in 2016.

The peak of Kyrgios' singles career came in 2022 when he reached his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

Since that moment, though, Kyrgios' career has been derailed due to a series of injuries. He played just one tournament between 2023 and 2024 due to knee, foot and wrist injuries.

After returning to the court in December 2024, Kyrgios struggled to regain his form in the few ATP events he has been able to play. He has a 2-7 record in singles matches over the past two years.

Kyrgios' most recent top-level event was at Wimbledon in doubles with Alexander Bublik. They were defeated in the first round by Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavić.
