Kane, 37, agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with the Blackhawks to set up a reunion between him and the team where he had the best years of his career. He played for Chicago from 2007 to 2023, winning a Hart Trophy and three Stanley Cups
The Blackhawks traded Kane to the Detroit Red Wings at the deadline in 2023 as they began shifting towards a rebuild. He played the last three seasons in Detroit on one-year deals.
When Kane decided to return for a 20th NHL season, rejoining the Blackhawks seemed like a perfect move, and now he's back with the team that drafted him first overall nearly two decades ago.
"What a time! To say I get to be a Blackhawk again is an amazing feeling... the love, passion and energy I've felt from the fans has been unparalleled, even when I was not always wearing the Blackhawks sweater," Kane wrote in a social media post after signing his new deal. "There's nothing like the city of Chicago and home games in the UC."
Kane is coming off a season in which he recorded 57 points (16 goals, 41 assists) in 67 games. He'll look to put together a strong year as the Blackhawks try to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Having a franchise legend like Kane should help the young, rebuilding squad progress this year.
