Mike Evans Injury, Latest on 49ers WR's Status After Leaving Joint Practice With Chargers

Paul KasabianAug 18, 2026

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans left his team's joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday with "tightness." However, the issue doesn't appear to be a long-term concern.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan relayed the news to reporters, per David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com.

"They just said he has some tightness, so we were just being smart, taking him out," Shanahan said. "I don't think it's anything worse, so we'll see when we get in there, but nothing that I'm worried about right now."

Bonilla offered more information on the matter.

"[Evans] exited the field to have his left foot/ankle wrapped and iced," Bonilla reported. "The good news is that Evans was seen shortly afterward observing the remainder of practice, with his foot/ankle no longer wrapped—though his quad had an ice pack on it."

David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard also provided insight.

Evans previously dealt with a quad strain suffered during an Aug. 1 practice. That ailment kept him out of 11-on-11 drills until Aug. 15, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Evans is a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro Second Teamer who won a Super Bowl with the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former Texas A&M star spent his first 12 NFL seasons on Tampa Bay, who selected the Aggie with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

For his career, Evans has 866 catches for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns. He's added 52 receptions for 801 yards and six scores in 10 playoff games.

He's been a beacon of consistency and excellence, amassing 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, including a career-high 1,524 yards in 2018. Evans also led the NFL with 13 receiving touchdowns in 2023.

Evans never missed more than three regular season games in a single year over his first 11 campaigns. Unfortunately, last year was a tough one for Evans, who missed three games with a hamstring strain in Week 3 against the New York Jets.

He then returned in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions but suffered a concussion and a broken collarbone after diving for a long pass. Evans missed his team's next six games. He did return for the final four games and caught 16 passes for 228 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Hopefully Evans is able to enjoy a good stretch of health with the 49ers. Training camp has provided some obstacles so far, but thankfully, Evans hasn't dealt with anything too serious. He appears well on track to be good to go for the season opener, which will be Thursday, Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia, against the Los Angeles Rams.
