Shedeur Sanders Reacts to INT in Browns' Preseason Opener amid QB1 Battle with Deshaun Watson

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders says he had the correct read but not the right execution on the play that led to his fourth-quarter interception in Saturday's preseason action against the Chicago Bears.

"It was the right read. It just slipped," Sanders told reporters after Saturday's preseason loss. "So, that's what makes me get mad a little bit because of it.

"But, any decision I'm making, I know it's the right decision. I just didn't execute the decision."

Browns coach Todd Monken said after Saturday's game it looked like Sanders had a "clear out with a dagger concept" before the "ball sailed a little bit on him."

Sanders finished out his second-half appearance having completed six of 11 pass attempts for 79 passing yards.

"I'd love to see there was a little push that got in his face," Monken said about Sanders, adding he felt the quarterback was "in the right place" just before the overthrow.

When asked what his best throw of the day was, Sanders answered, "Check down to the running back in the red zone."

"They go Cover 0, I expect to get the ball out of my hand... the best thing for me is more understanding down and distance, and we've been doing that, emphasizing that, every day in practice," Sanders said.

Monken said last weekend he felt one area in which he wanted Sanders to grow was "being able to check the ball down and get it out of his hands."

Sanders will get at least one more week of first-team reps to make his case to be named QB1 over Deshaun Watson, who started Saturday against the Bears.

Monken said Sanders and Watson will be splitting first-team reps over the next week, including during joint practices with the Buffalo Bills, before Sanders starts next Saturday's preseason matchup against the Bills.

"I'm just excited getting reps," Sanders said. "I'm excited for this week."

Monken said Saturday he wasn't yet ready to name a Week 1 starter, but said he would be "100 percent" confident in turning to Watson should the veteran quarterback win the positional battle.

The Browns currently plan to "reevaluate" the quarterback competition after Sanders starts and Watson plays the third quarter of the upcoming Bills game, according to Monken.
