Sanders finished out the 2025 campaign as the Browns' starter, completing 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It was a rough start to his career, but an offseason of work behind him could see the former fifth-rounder take major strides.
Watson hasn't played since October 2024 and has appeared in just 19 games since joining the Browns ahead of the 2022 campaign. While several injuries have led to an extended period off the field, he has the most familiarity with the organization.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that Watson's longevity with the team could play to his advantage.
"It certainly seems like Deshaun Watson has the leg up here. He's the one who is more well-versed in the Browns' operations," Rapoport reported.
The upcoming preseason games could give fans a better idea of which way the coaching staff is leaning in the battle.
Head coach Todd Monken said earlier in training camp that the plan is to let both quarterbacks get reps during the preseason, and the leader of the competition after two games will get the start in the final preseason game.
The Browns play their first preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. The depth chart for that game lists "Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders" at the quarterback position.
