Patrick Mahomes Says He's 'Trying to Push It,' Updates Injury Recovery amid Chiefs Training Camp

Adam WellsAug 8, 2026

Even though Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been noncommittal about Patrick Mahomes playing at all in the preseason, the star quarterback is doing all he can in camp to make sure his body is ready whenever he does play in a game again.

Speaking to reporters after Saturday's training camp practice, Mahomes admitted he's "trying to push it" as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL.

Every indication from camp so far suggests Mahomes will be ready to play in Week 1 of the regular season. He wasย fully clearedย to practice and go through all of the periods they have in camp a few days before players reported.

Mahomes has been on the field every day since the Chiefs' first full-squad workout on July 29. There's nothing to indicate he is being limited in his movement in and out of the pocket.

Despite the positive progress for Mahomes thus far, Reidย told reportersย on Friday he is "leaning against" letting his star quarterback play in the Chiefs' preseason opener on Aug. 15 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Reid also said he was unclear if Mahomes would play in the final two preseason games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Aug. 22) and Seattle Seahawks (Aug. 28).

Mahomes has played at least two preseason games every year of his NFL career. His 14 pass attempts in the preseason last year were his fewest, but he still started two games.

The Chiefs' Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos is on Sept. 14, exactly nine months to the day that he tore his ACL. The injury occurred on Dec. 14 in a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking for a bounce-back season in 2026. Last season marked the first time they missed the playoffs since 2014 and first time finishing with a losing record since 2012.
