New Patrick Mahomes Injury Update Revealed By Andy Reid Ahead of Chiefs Training Camp

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Patrick Mahomes' recovery from a torn ACL heading into training camp.

Reid told reporters Friday that Mahomes has been fully cleared to practice "and do all the different periods we have in this camp, and then we'll just take it day by day and see how he does."

"I feel stronger than I've ever felt, as far as strength and lifting [weights]," Mahomes added while speaking with reporters. "I feel amazing. ... I'm excited just to be able to play football. I've been seeing cinderblock walls rehabbing every single day in Kansas City. Now to be on that practice field with my teammates, it's going to be a lot of fun."

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on SportsCenter that the Chiefs will be cautious with Mahomes' activity in camp, but the signal-caller is looking to return to a normal practice setting and potentially suit up in the preseason (1:45 mark).

The two-time MVP previously confirmed that his goal is to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.

"I've said that since the beginning is being ready to go Week 1," Mahomes said during a July 15 appearance on Yahoo Sports Daily. "I can't predict the future and I know that it's a long process. It's not just my decision, but at the same time I'm going to give the doctors and the coaches every single opportunity I can to let me be out there Week 1."

A season-opening return would represent a swift recovery for Mahomes, who tore his ACL in Week 15 of the 2025 season.

In May, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach revealed that the star passer was "way ahead of schedule" in his rehab.

After making 10 consecutive playoff appearances and winning three Super Bowl titles from 2015-24, Kansas City finished at 6-11 and missed the postseason last year.

If Mahomes doesn't miss any regular-season action before returning under center, it would provide a boost to the Chiefs' hopes of contending in the AFC West once again.

The 30-year-old completed 62.7 percent of his throws for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions across 14 starts in 2025.

Kansas City will open its 2026 campaign against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
