Roger Goodell Completes 'Ice Bucket Challenge' in Video to Support Chris Johnson After ALS Diagnosis

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is joining in on the ALS ice bucket challenge in support of former NFL running back Chris Johnson.

Goodell challenged the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class to join in on the challenge next.

Johnson first shared his ALS diagnosis in June. He later asked in a social media post for supporters to participate in the ice bucket challenge.

Participants in the challenge since then have involved a host of former NFL stars including Marshawn Lynch, Adam Jones and LenDale White.

NBC's broadcast of the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game included a message from Johnson thanking people who participated in the challenge.

Former NFL running backs Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas helped by dumping ice on Goodell in his participation video.

The video came alongside a $500,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to the Massachusetts General Hospital's Healey and AMG Center for ALS, according to the NFL.

The NFL also shared a donation link of a Center for ALS contribution drive launched by Johnson's family in his honor.

"At just 39 years old, Chris was diagnosed with ALS, a devastating disease that gradually takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe," the fundraiser description reads.

"Together with our family, he has dedicated himself to advancing ALS research by participating in innovative treatment programs and sharing his story in the hope that it will bring greater awareness, inspire more funding, and help accelerate the search for better treatments and, ultimately, a cure."

As of the time Goodell's challenge was posted Friday, the drive had raised more than $125,000.

Johnson, 40, played 10 NFL seasons including six for the Tennessee Titans between 2008 and 2017. He is one of nine running backs to record at least 2,000 rushing yards in a single season.

The Titans are set to celebrate his career with a Ring of Honor induction ceremony at halftime of the team's season opener on Sept. 13.
