Rafael Nadal survived on Wednesday. Many of the other top contenders in action weren't so lucky, however.

It wasn't easy for Nadal, but he played well in a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky. After, he simply seemed pleased to be moving on, per ATPWorldTour.com:

"

The important thing is winning,You have another opportunity tomorrow.

This is a part of the season that I won zero points last year.  Every match that I won are points that I add to the computer for my [Emirates ATP Ranking]. That's important for me today. Every victory is important for me. That was a good one. Let's try tomorrow.

"

At moments, Nadal flashed his vintage form in the victory.

Nadal will next face Mikhail Youzhny, who upset No. 9 Gilles Simon, 6-1, 6-4.

Simon wasn't the only player to bow out on Wednesday, however, as No. 5 Tomas Berdych, No. 6 Marin Cilic and No. 14 Grigor Dimitrov all were upset.

As usual, however, the Big Four was unaffected by the upset bug, as No. 2 Andy Murray knocked off Tommy Robredo, 6-4, 7-5. It wasn't all fun and games for Murray, though.

"I lost my timing in the middle of the second set but came up with some good shots towards the end," Murray told BBC Sport. "I feel much better on the court. I am hitting my back hand better and it forced Tommy to slice the ball. Then I could dictate the points. It wasn't something I could do early on in the year."

Nonetheless, it was an excellent overall display from the Brit. He was able to push Robredo back throughout with some thunderous groundstrokes, before manoeuvring his opponent around the court with forensic accuracy.

It's the kind of game a player needs in a tournament to pick up some rhythm with tougher challenges to come later on in the draw. In Round 3, the big-serving Gilles Muller will pose an entirely different kind of test for the two-time Grand Slam winner.

Thursday promises to be another intriguing day at the tournament, as No. 1 Novak Djokovic, along with Murray and Nadal, will be in action.

Wednesday was not a good day to have a number next to your name in the women's draw, as the top-seeded players in this tournament dropped like flies.

No. 3 Petra Kvitova, No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 7 Lucie Safarova, No. 8 Garbine Muguruza and No. 11 Ekaterina Makarova all were upset on the day, as the path continued to clear for top-seed Serena Williams.

All was not lost for the favored players, however, as No. 2 Simona Halep and No. 5 Ana Ivanovic each advanced.

Of all of the players to fail to advance, however, Kvitova might be given a pass, as she lost to Victoria Azarenka. It was a good showing from Azarenka, per Matt Cronin of USTA.com:

Kvitova's struggles this season are to be expected, however, as she was recently diagnosed with mononucleosis, per CNN. While Kvitova won't use that as an excuse, it certainly explains her dip in form and her sluggishness late in matches.

Nothing has been slowing down Serena Williams this season, though, and the top-ranked player will be in action tomorrow against No. 16 Andrea Petkovic. That will highlight a full day of some exciting matchups on tap in the women's game, with Halep facing No. 13 Angelique Kerber and Azarenka taking on No. 15 Sara Errani.

Williams and company will be hoping the upset bug doesn't bite again on Thursday.
