Jerry Dipoto, Former Angels GM, Hired by Red Sox as Baseball Consultant

Matt FitzgeraldAug 12, 2015

Former Los Angeles Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto will join the Boston Red Sox front office as a baseball consultant, per Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo first confirmed the news and cited Peter Gammons' original report in doing so, indicating Dipoto will help reshape the Red Sox roster this offseason.

Dipoto resigned as Angels GM this July after approximately three-and-a-half years and one playoff appearance in 2014. A strained relationship between Dipoto and L.A. manager Mike Scioscia led to the former's abrupt departure.

Over The Monster's Joon Lee feels the Angels' high-profile free-agent acquisitions of Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton were decisions owner Arte Moreno made more so than Dipoto:

Entering a less pressure-packed situation for one of the MLB's most storied franchises is a logical next step in Dipoto's career.

Considerable turnover is transpiring in Boston with CEO Larry Lucchino stepping down at the end of the season. Current Red Sox GM Ben Cherington weighed in last week on what the future will hold, per the Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson:

"

I've always reported to someone. I've reported to a boss, and that's been Larry. I assume going forward I'll have a boss.  I've always felt like the Red Sox benefited -- and baseball operations benefits -- from strong senior leadership. That's good for baseball operations. Larry has been in that role. We'll have to just wait and see what exact structural changes there are.

"

It's unclear just how Boston's power structure will be set up in the winter with Dipoto coming aboard. What is certain is the organization now has two capable general managers to collaborate and shape the direction the team goes in 2016 and beyond.

The Red Sox are on their way to missing the playoffs for the second time in as many years after winning the 2013 World Series. Cherington has taken some heat for the club's performance, so it has to help bringing in someone in Dipoto who's dealt with such circumstances in a big market before.

Cherington has publicly professed support for manager John Farrell. That means it's up to the personnel men, led by Cherington and Dipoto, to provide Farrell with better talent, and the marquee collaboration figures to only benefit the cause.
